Mayor Crombie Marks International Day of the Girl
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, we join with communities from around the world to mark International Day of the Girl.
“In Mississauga, we are enriched by the thoughtful, compassionate and determined young women who are making a positive and lasting difference in our community.
“As mayor, I draw strength from the energy, ideas and ambitions of the dynamic, inspiring girls I meet when visiting schools or at events in the broader community.
“This past year, we hosted our first ever International Women’s Day Young (IWD) Women’s Empowerment Breakfast with special guest, Her Honour, Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
“Two female students from each Mississauga secondary school were invited to take part. As part of the discussions, each student in attendance was asked to answer one question: What bold actions can young women take to shape Canada’s next 150 years?
“We heard a number of promising ideas including the need to ensure ongoing access to quality public education, safe and welcoming communities and the need to mentor and support girls to realize and pursue their aspirations. My office looks forward to hosting its second annual IWD empowerment breakfast on March 8th, 2018.
“On International Day of the Girl let’s make sure all girls and women know that they can be and do anything! Our daughters can and will change the world.”
