Statement by Mayor Crombie: Mississauga International Partnership Program Committee

The following is a statement by Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie following the inaugural meeting of the Mississauga International Partnership Program Committee – a new working group dedicated to generating economic development:

“In March, we formally launched the Mississauga International Partnership Program Committee at Pearson Airport. And here we are today, ready to get to work.

“The new Mississauga International Partnership Program Committee is about leveraging Mississauga’s international expertise, cultural diversity and networks to help our local economy reach its full potential.

“Looking around this room, we have leaders from the private sector; government; business; academia; and cultural business organizations, all committed to the job ahead.

“Growing Mississauga’s connections to markets will lead to local business opportunities, in this increasingly interconnected world.

“The Committee will identify strategies and set goals to elevate Mississauga’s globally renowned reputation as a leading destination for entrepreneurs and established businesses to invest; develop and test new marketable concepts; expand service offerings; create local jobs; and achieve unrivaled success.

“Strengthening connections with global communities will better prepare us to welcome international delegations of incoming trade missions to Mississauga.

“I have already met with the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce; the Mississauga Chinese Business Association; and in February I met one-on-one with China’s new Consul General.

“If we are competing on a global stage against other jurisdictions, we must be proactive to attract the businesses and industries we want.

“And as Honorary Chair of the MIPP, I will proactively engage international delegations to see for themselves all Mississauga has to offer.

“Earlier this month fDi American Cities – an internationally recognized magazine – ranked Mississauga:

  • Top 10 in large cities for having a foreign-direct investment strategy;
  • Top 10 in large cities for business friendliness;
  • Top 10 in large cities for connectivity; and
  • Top 10 large city overall.

“The 2015-2016 fDi American Cities of the Future rankings are further proof that Mississauga is a world-class city with a global reputation to do business with.

“We have accomplished lots in our 41 years. And through MIPP, we will further leverage our diversity and global connections to access new markets to grow Mississauga’s international reach.

“Now let’s get to work.”
