Statement by Mayor Crombie Marking the Reign of Queen Elizabeth
The following is a statement by Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie commemorating the Queen’s achievement as the longest-reigning Sovereign of our nation in modern times. Mayor Crombie recently wrote to Queen Elizabeth to further acknowledge this milestone; attached is Mayor Crombie’s correspondence to Queen and the Buckingham Palace response.
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, we join with communities across Canada to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s historic achievement as the longest-reigning Sovereign of our nation in modern times.
“This is a tremendous milestone, and the longevity of Her Majesty’s tenure is a testament to the important and enduring place the monarchy has as a respected institution in our parliamentary democracy.
“Although, the world has changed dramatically since her Coronation in 1953, the relationship between Canada and the Crown continues to be one of respect and genuine affection.
“One of my first acts as Mayor was to formally welcome Ontario Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell to Mississauga for a Civic Call. This was an opportunity to strengthen the bond between the Crown and Mississaugans.
“During Her Majesty’s reign there have been a number of historic moments for our country. The Queen’s sincere understanding, support and loyalty to Canadians were evident when our elected representatives undertook the process of final patriation of the Constitution and established The Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As the signatory of the Proclamation of the Constitution Act, Her Majesty recognized the Canadian Constitution and Canadian sovereignty.
“2015 continues to be a joyous occasion for the Crown. In particular, I would like to congratulate Her Majesty on the arrival of her newest great-grandchild, Princess Charlotte; may both the Princess and Prince George enjoy their great-grandmother’s strength, wisdom and longevity.
“Finally, I would like to recognize the volunteers and leadership of The Monarchist League of Canada who dedicated themselves to raising awareness and ensuring that this occasion was appropriately recognized by municipalities. I wish to further acknowledge those members who will come before Council today, during General Committee, to make a deputation to mark this day.”
