Statement: Mayor Crombie Marks Queen Elizabeth II 91st Birthday
“On behalf of the City of Mississauga and Members of Council, we join cities and towns across Canada, and the Commonwealth, to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s 91st birthday.
“The longevity of Her Majesty’s tenure is a testament to the important and enduring place the monarchy has as a respected institution in our parliamentary democracy.
“The relationship between the Crown and Canada’s communities continues to be one of respect and genuine affection.
“In March 2017, we formally welcomed Ontario Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell to Mississauga to be the guest speaker for our first ever International Women’s Day Young Women’s Empowerment Breakfast – an opportunity to engage young, female leaders on ways to shape Canada’s promising future.
“This was occasion was another an opportunity to strengthen the bond between youth and the Crown.
“During Her Majesty’s reign there have been a number of historic moments for our country.
“The Queen’s sincere understanding, support and loyalty to Canadians were evident when our elected representatives undertook the process of final patriation of the Constitution and established The Charter of Rights and Freedoms, signed 35 years ago this week.
“As the signatory of the Proclamation of the Constitution Act, Her Majesty recognized the Canadian Constitution and Canadian sovereignty.
“As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation and our nation’s founding, Queen Elizabeth II continues to be an important figure in the lives of generations of Canadians.
“Once again, on behalf of Council and the residents of Mississauga, we offer our best wishes to Queen Elizabeth II for a very memorable and happy 91st birthday.”
